Located in the heart of the Marais district of Paris, the Hotel Jacques de Molay is ideal for discovering the rich heritage of the capital. Add to the lustre of your stay in Paris with a generous helping of sequins and glamour by including in your itinerary a visit to the Palais Galliera and its fabulous exhibition dedicated to Dalida. From April 27th to August 13th, 2017, this spotlight on her wardrobe pays tribute to the Egyptian-born singer who passed away thirty years ago.

A passion for the stage

Although it is music that we think of first when the name of Dalida is mentioned, it was in the world of modelling that the former Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti first made an impression. She was born in 1933 into an Italian family in Cairo and won a prestigious beauty contest in 1954. This victory led to opportunities for her to make a number of important contacts and begin her musical career. From that time on she never ceased to fascinate the public, who were captivated by Dalida’s beauty, her voice and her tragedy-laden love life. At the Dalida exhibition at the Palais Galliera you can see sumptuous costumes adorned with feathers, sequins or multi-coloured embroideries. With her mannequin size, long blond hair and rounded figure, the singer embodied a certain Mediterranean beauty, both voluptuous and earthily authentic. It’s no surprise then that we find in her wardrobe the greatest names of the ready-to-wear and haute couture of the time, from Carven to Yves-Saint-Laurent.

A glimpse behind the facade of a star

If extravagant and glamorous outfits were Dalida's trademark, they also allow us to approach her in a strangely intimate way and discover the woman hidden behind the star. Passionate and emotional, Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti was a popular singer and celebrity and this aura of glory only increased after her tragic death. By visiting the Dalida exhibition at the Palais Galliera, a recently renovated building in the 16th arrondissement, you can follow the changing tastes and personality of the star over time, from the shy girl with a suitcase full of dreams to the singer, queen of the stage and tragic diva she became. In addition to a selection of dozens of dresses, the Palais Galliera has also included accessories, shoes and makeup. You will leave this exhibition with a greater understanding of a star whose thirty year career embraced a variety of musical genres up to and including disco.
